The National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA) is a national organization established in 1988 that represents the interests of more than 40,000 attorneys, judges, law professors, and law students from nearly 60 Asian Pacific American (APA) bar associations. NAPABA held its California-Nevada Regional Conference here in Los Angeles at the Sheraton Hotel Downtown on June 19th and 20th. The theme for the Regional Conference was "Redefining Service - The Expanding Role of APA Lawyers." The goals of the Regional Conference were to explore how APA lawyers can better serve the public interest, devote time to public service, retool their skill sets to meet a changing economy, foster diversity in their profession, and maximize their contribution to the community. The Korean American Bar Association of Southern California (KABA), along with several other local APA bar associations, helped organize the Regional Conference. The organizing effort was led by Ekwan Rhow, NAPABA's Regional Governor and former President of KABA, and Bruce Ishimatsu, Chair of NAPABA's Partner Committee. This year's conference catered to nearly 200 attendees and included speeches from legal and community leaders such as Erwin Chemerinsky, the renowned constitutional law and civil rights expert who is the Founding Dean of the newly formed UC Irvine School of Law and Susan Ahn Cuddy, a pioneer of women and minorities in the legal practice and a former Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, a Naval Intelligence Officer, and analyst during the Cold War. Rocky Delgadillo, the former Los Angeles City Attorney was also in attendance at the kickoff reception and several conference events. The Regional Conference also offered a host of continuing legal education, networking and information events. NAPABA members presented seminars and panel discussions on topics such as APA's in Politics, Bankruptcy Law, Intellectual Property Law, Securities Litigation, Entertainment Law and Complex Civil Disputes. In addition to regional conferences, NAPABA hosts a national convention each year bringing together APA lawyers from across the country. The 2009 NAPABA national convention will be held in Boston, Massachusetts from November 18th through 22nd. For more information regarding NAPABA and its events, please visit the organization's website at www.napaba.org.
