| 1. Law Day 2009 |
|
|
The waiting room at Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles (LAFLA) was overflowing with people seeking free legal advice from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 2, 2009. Every year, on Law Day (May 1st or the Saturday immediately following), KABA attorneys and members of the local Lion's Club come out and volunteer their time to the Korean -American community in Los Angeles.
Law Day U.S.A. is a special day of focusing on America's heritage of liberty, justice, and equality under law. This national celebration originated in 1957 with the vision of American Bar Association President Charles S. Rhyne to celebrate our legal system. This vision was followed by a proclamation of President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1958, establishing Law Day. Then, in 1961, a joint resolution of Congress designated May 1st as the official date to celebrate Law Day.
This year, a total of 18 attorneys and 6 Lion's Club members came together to serve over 50 clients in the following areas of law: immigration, criminal, bankruptcy, family, employment, landlord/tenant, foreclosure, and identity theft. While most KABA attorneys were bilingual, those who could not speak Korean were assisted by a Lion's Club member.
Several years ago, after seeing the overwhelmingly positive response from the Korean-American community at Law Day, KABA began to host a monthly free legal clinic from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on the second Tuesday of every month at LAFLA. To this day, these monthly clinics average about 35 clients and 10 attorneys. In addition to providing legal counsel in several practice areas, KABA has recently added a small claims assistance program to its monthly clinics. Attorneys in this program help clients assess their claim, complete the small-claims forms, and prepare for trial.
KABA appreciates the many attorneys and volunteers, who have demonstrated a lifetime commitment to the ideals of Law Day, by coming out every month to the free legal clinics!
